Pulmonary Function Studies on Normal Koreans Ventilation and Oxygen Consumption during exercise and Diffusion

Abstract
There has been no normal values available for healthy Koreans on respiratory gas exchange and pulmonary function measurements during exercise. The purpose of present study is to establish standard values on ventilation and oxygen consumption during exercise, and diffusing capacity of oxygen through alveolar-capillary membrane, based upon studies on 58 males and 25 females,
Results of measurements are as follows ;
(1) The mean value of exercise ventilation measured by open circuit method of Cournand and Richards were 10.6¡¾2.53L¡¬min.¡¬M©÷ for mald and 8.0¡¾1.92L¡¬min.¡¬M©÷ for female.
(2) The mean values of oxygen consumption during exercise were 601¡¾133.9 c.c¡¬min¡¬M©÷ for male and 493¡¾105.3 c.c¡¬min¡¬M©÷ for female.
(3) The mean values of ventilation equivalent and ratio of oxygen removal for male were 1.79¡¾0.42L. and 58.4¡¾14.1 c.c respectively and those for females were 1.67¡¾0.37L. and 62.4¡¾12.4c.c respectively.
(4) Diffusion test done by Ornstein¢¥s method revealed the mean values of oxygen and carbon dioxide of males at the end of 20 seconds rebreathing to be 7.6¡¾1.79% and 7.2¡¾1.04% respectively, and those of females to be 7.5¡¾1.21% and 7.4¡¾0.93% respectively.
(5) It was noted that results of above measurements showed no significant difference from those of Americans.
